Nagamma, Laxmi and Chowdamma

Nagamma, Laxmi and Chowdamma are disabled women aged 18-20 years living in Parigi, Kallumari & Mothukapallu respectively. They were uneducated and relegated to living at home without any income opportunity. Everybody neglected them.

In this condition ROH identified them and asked them to attend interviews at the Darigi Mandal Revenue Office, for selection into a training program to impart income-generating skills. ROH selected them for their courses on Basket making, Home Appliances repairs and Electronic Products Assembly respectively. They were trained through a systematic schedule in 1999. After completion of training they were given tool kits and certificates. ROH helped them in availing credit facility from Banks and they got US $107 each.

Today, each of them is an independent and self-reliant income earner, living their lives with dignity and pride. All three of them have also repaid the loan they had taken from the bank.

Pavan Kumar

9 year old Pavan Kumar was identified by an ROH field worker as hearing impaired. Pavan's father was a Priest and his mother, a daily wage worker. He was a neglected child, living in unhygienic conditions, playing at drainages, wearing dirty clothes, and taking bath only occasionally. He had dropped out of school a long time back, as the teachers found him "uninteresting."

The ROH field worker intervened in this condition and counselled the parents. She stressed the importance of cleanliness, personal hygiene, education and other services given by ROH. Pavan was checked up medically and provided with a Medical certificate, and applied for pension. He was trained in hearing aid usage and given an aid on the advice of a doctor. His primary education was resumed. He was admitted into the rehabilitation centre and is now doing well in learning skills of special education for the hearing impaired.

Pavan has learned sign language with the help of the specially trained teachers. His parents feel good for him now, and hope for his bright future.
